President’s Message – Angela O’Neill

Dear GNJSHFSA Members,

As life seems to pass us by at warp speed and we are all well into our 2014 calendar year there are many successes that our organization have to celebrate and be proud of.

I would like to extend a huge thank you to our 2013 President, Dawn Cascio, for providing us all with so many opportunities for continuing education credits and for mentoring me personally for the role of President. The board, at a recent meeting, presented Dawn with a beautiful crystal serving platter.  I would also like to thank our Board of Directors for being an amazing crew who live up to our Chapter with Attitude slogan and are always willing to come up with great educational and networking ideas that support our goals. Our vendor partners deserve our utmost gratitude for their generous support that enables us to thrive as a wonderful healthcare food service organization.

Winston Churchill said, “To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often.” In our industry we are all being asked to find ways to do more with less but still exceed the expectations of our patients and customers. Some of the best ways for all of us to succeed is to network, share ideas, and support each other through the journeys of change.

Attending our events and communicating with the vendor partners to see if there are ways that efficiencies or cost saving measures can occur is vital in our industry today.  One change that GNJSHFSA has embraced is to partner with the Jersey Shore Chef’s Association which qualifies us to offer ACF credits for our events when applicable.

We have also altered our mode of communication within the organization. We are excited to be able to provide our membership with up to date news stories by using our website as a forum for everyone to be able to submit items to. This conversion will replace the printing and distribution of the Bi- Annual Newsletter.

Is there something that you implemented at your facility that you are enthusiastic to share?  Did a team member get recognized? Is there a wonderful new product you were introduced to that improved your services? Now is the time to share!

We ask all members to submit their news briefs or articles to our board member, Joanne McMillian, at We will post these in the NEWS section of the GNJSHFSA webpage –  So visit it often to keep up with all the wonderful contributions we all make in the healthcare foodservice industry.

Recently we were delighted to hear that our chapter has three culinary teams that were selected to compete at the National AHF conference in Orlando Florida next month. We are very proud of the teams selected : from St Clare’s are Aatul Jain and Joanne McMillian ; Tim Gee and Nicolas Mercogliano from Robert Wood Johnson; and lastly from Valley Hospital, Steven Bressler and John Graziano. We wish them all the best of luck!

The calendar for the remainder of the year is coming together and you will be hearing about some great events coming up. I highly recommend that you all attend the Taco’s with Attitude competition on May 22nd from 6pm-8:30pm at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. This event is free to all members and is always an awesome time.

Thank you for the honor of allowing me to be your President in 2014 and I look forward to seeing you throughout the year!

On April 24th  Hunterdon Medical Center hosted over 120 children for Take your Child to Work Day. The kitchen was a buzz providing a continental breakfast, lunch and ice cream social for the children and their parent. Our Clinical Nutrition Manager, Lynda Hesse, RD along with our College of Saint Elizabeth intern Lydia Lelah did a hands on snack preparation demo with the children.

Groups of them were divided up to make either a salsa or hummus dip that they then enjoyed as their snack while Lydia interacted with them on some nutrition facts. It was a wonderful day for all and as always the ice cream social was enjoyed by all.

New Dish Machine Installed – Angela O’Neill, Director’s Thoughts

Previous Machine & Scrap Area

Previous Machine & Scrap Area

Recently a new Hobart dish machine was installed at our facility. It was definitely a

learning process as this was the first machine I have installed since becoming the director. The previous machine had a long curved conveyor that often would not work properly so a redesign to the area with a smaller breakdown area that eliminated a conveyor. This also provided more space in the breakdown area.

In addition to having the machine installed we had to have a new ventilation system installed, along with some new plumbing and lastly painting and re-grouting of the floor. We are very pleased with our new Hobart machine and a big thank you to our GNJSHFSA vendor partner PBAC Associates and representative Alex Grover.
